Works are not a bad thing at all. But works are also not a prerequisite for salvation. Works are not the root of salvation but the fruits of salvation. Repentance and faith alone in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior will get you into heaven and eternal life (e.g. the thief on the cross). But if one has faith now, while one lives they should seek with all their heart to be obedient to Christ and be a servant as He was a servant.
